Our baby turns one today. It’s been both the longest and the quickest year; one of much joy and many challenges. Being a mom has been far more all-consuming than I could have prepared for, in both the work and the love. No matter the frustrations or the exhaustion, Zaya brings us such delight in the everyday, and it has been the neatest thing to watch him learn and explore the world around him.
Last week, Shane had returned home from being away for work, and I was preparing for a twelve hour wedding the following day. We had mere minutes together as a family in between, so I walked away from the dirty dishes and curled up on the couch with Shane as Zaya played on the floor. I think Zaya must have known the timing was just right, because it was then that he decided to take his first steps – one, two, three – right to his proud (and stunned) parents!
I remember when he was just newly born, my heart ached at the thought of him growing up. Am I ever relieved to know that every stage truly is fun. These days, Zaya loves to read books and he will actually take your hand, open it up, and place a book in it and settle into your lap for story time. Seriously, my favorite.
And so to my sweet, smart, silly and curious little boy, happy first birthday! You are so very loved.
