Saturday, June 18, 2011, 5:15 am – Journal Entry – My toes are tingling and my heart is racing, my mind jumping from one memory to another idea, and then on to the next. Last night, in a Starbucks re-creation of our first date, Shane got down on bended knee and asked me to marry him. “Ever since our first date I knew you were the one… I fall more and more in love with you each day… Mikaela Ruth, will you marry me?” He says there was a pause before I said yes! Of course! And then I dropped to the ground to be close to him and to hug him and he slipped the ring on to my finger.
What was to be a photo field trip, at this great place he had discovered, turned out to be the night of our engagement! This grand scheme that he and close friends were in on. He led me to this clearing in the woods and he told me to close my eyes. I clung to his hand but he felt different, his arm was tense. The moment I was allowed to open my eyes is a moment that will be burned into my memory forever. It was the most peculiar feeling to see something so unexpected, so creatively carried out, something that took weeks and hours to plan, for me. For this moment. For us. Surreal.
Starbucks in the woods. Our Starbucks, our first date in those two comfy chairs, with our same two drinks – a passion tea lemonade and a green tea lemonade, and that fruit bar Shane had as well. A homemade candle in a Starbucks sample cup flickered, the prettiest bouquet of pink peonies, and music playing in the background. We sat, me in stunned silence and broken sentences. Knowing what would most likely come next, but not daring to think it, at the same time. Derrick ran by in the corner of my eye, leaving behind a video camera, while I caught someone taking photos in the bushes! Another video camera on a table! Crap, why didn’t I wear my contacts tonight, why the glasses? And off they came :) Then Shane pulled out a ring box and said those words and it happened.
Oh I don’t want to forget a thing about this night! Shane asked if I’d like a tour and again and again I was blown away by the detail, thought and love he had put into it. “Where did..how did..whaa…?” I mean, just take a good look at the pictures! We picked up the cameras (that was what we were there for, after all!), laughing at how difficult it was when you’re shaking, and then Andie was allowed to run out and the celebrating began! Particularly when Shane handed me his phone and on the other end was friend and wedding photographer Jasmine Star. To congratulate us and – as if I didn’t already have more than enough to completely stun me – to say that next week, when Shane and I come to California and meet up with her and JD for lunch, well we’re not having lunch. We’re having our engagement shoot!!! Seriously?! Am I the luckiest girl or what?
Close friends and family began to trickle in, Shane snuck away to change into a Starbucks barista uniform, and it was a party! How special it was to celebrate with everyone, even if it still hadn’t settled in yet. Bonny told me to savour it, take it in, this is my engagement. I’m grateful for her reminder :)It was a blur and I’m so happy to have video footage! We’re in the process of having a video created and once it is, it will be posted right here! Ahh I could keep typing but it’s been an exhausting weekend (who can sleep when there is a wedding to the man of your dreams to plan?!?!) and I’m ready to let the photos tell the rest of our story….
It’s true – we re-enacted the proposal for the sake of pictures :)
At first I thought he misspelled wi-fi for some reason…until it was pointed out that it’s actually pronounced ‘wifey’ ;)
My excited disbelief at Jasmine’s phone call and surprise!
I still can’t get over this…plus, I really like the sound of my soon-to-be new name :)
Jack Johnson for the concert of his we went to last Fall…oh and notice the ‘Congratulations’ card? Details, details!
Any aspect that could possibly personalized, he was on it…
I was teased because of my excitement over the strands of lights Shane bought! Like, look what I’m marrying into!
Love these girls!
And the ring. Which Shane searched for and picked out with absolutely no word from me…I think it’s the most beautiful thing.
Shane, Shane, Shane. My fiance! I know I was too stunned for many words on Friday night but I hope you know just how much you mean to me. I’m still blown away that you’re mine, that God chose you for me. Me. You bless my life in more ways than I can count and your total thoughtfulness in creating the BEST proposal EVER just goes to show that. I’m so excited to be on this journey with you, my best friend, as it takes us to our wedding day and a lifetime beyond. I LOVE YOU!!
And to all those that helped out and set up and took pictures and filmed and celebrated…thank you from the bottom of my/our heart.
Now off to California!! :)
Edited to add: Shane and I are blown away by all the congrats, well wishes, love and support everyone has shown. I wish I could hug each and every one of you! This small note of sincere thanks will have to suffice…thank you, thank you. You’ve made this exciting time that much more memorable! xox
